Kate's Tribute to Jonty

Created by liz mardel 3 years ago
Under normal circumstances today would have been full of hugs and sharing Jonty stories, being together, and we would have asked one of our beloved cousins to do this part but as we can’t, I will give this my best shot……

We’ve received so many lovely messages from friends and family, thank you all, it really does help.   This one from Theresa Wade particularly resonated with us.

“Dear Liz, Lucy & Kate I always think of your family, and of course John, as one of our local pathfinders, stretching the boundaries of life to show what can be achieved with love, a willingness to break down barriers and to enjoy life!
John’s move to Yeovil then Thistledown and Blendworth provided us with inspiration for our son Mark as John coped so well, and with his growing independence he was able to explore new horizons and opportunities.   John was such a credit to you all but even more so to himself for all he achieved.”

With that I also want to acknowledge my amazing parents for the unlimited love and support they gave Jonty and for the unfailing belief in him they ensured we all had.

I messaged a friend of mine when she had twins 4 years ago; these words seem all the more poignant today.

“Hi Andrea, I just wanted to send a note as I have realised that one of your beautiful boys has that extra little chromosome.  You may know that my older brother has Downs Syndrome and of course is one of the most important people in my life.   I love him so, so dearly.  John taught me how to walk and was my mentor and protector, until the point when I became his.
My friends welcomed John into their lives with open minds and open hearts and loved him, as I do.
I just wanted to tell you that having Jonty in my life has made me (and them) a better person, no question.

John brings out the good and the pure in people, he is emotionally so tuned in to people and is often a better judge of character than me, particularly in the pub on a Friday night.  He knows instinctually what genuine looks like as if he can see straight into your heart and people respond to him like I have never seen in others.
It’s been a challenge and a gift all wrapped up and we wouldn’t change him for the world.
Jonty is my world.
It’s a different journey but just as rewarding and the unconditional love is like nothing else you will ever experience.
I just wanted to share some of these things with you.  You’re in for so much fun!”

And it has been so much fun.  I feel unbelievably proud of Jonty and honoured to be his sister.  Life will not be the same without him…….
